Sherlock Holes on the Lookout for Leaks

Category: In the News

Welcome to the New Year. Hard to believe we’ll already soon be hunting Easter eggs again!

Meanwhile we've been busy finding leaks. You might have seen our Sherlock Holes leak detection article published on Inside Water and our LinkedIn page.

It always amazes us when we see how long some people leave leaks running when, with the right methodology, skill set, and equipment like our SebaKMT HL7000 or the C3 Correlux, it can be so easy and quick to stop the wastage. Interestingly, in most cases we don't actually need this high tech gear to get to the root cause. Our common sense and experience from troubleshooting, diagnosing, monitoring and verifying hundreds of leaks, and increasingly UtiliOS’ AI based diagnosis, are enough to find the cause.

This makes it easy, cheap and simple for you, with minimal time and effort input, to correct the issue. In three recent leak detection cases, the client got their money back within three to six weeks!

That Nike motto: Just do it! could never have been more appropriate!

Commercial smart metering – the proof is in the pudding

Below are five recent examples of leaks found and fixed - and that’s only a fraction of the 74 cases that we are currently actively triaging under our AWARE water management program.

Cause: Leak hidden in wall

Cause: An underground pipe had split due to tree roots

Cause: Underground leak

Cause: Hole in irrigation system for garden bed

Cause: Leaking in fire hydrant

This financial year alone, it has saved our clients 230,900 kL across 77 cases. That makes it 3,000 kL/case worth a staggering $10,000 per case - which is amazing when you compare that to the cost of just a few hundred dollars for the active monitoring of a meter.

If you finally want to sleep easy, put a rest to undetected leaks wasting millions of litres of water and your money without your knowledge, contact Michael for a quote to smart meter your portfolio and sites.

Staff changes

Sadly, Tina, our AWARE Analyst, will leave us to pursue a career analysing data in the media space. We wish her best of luck. She's done a tremendous job for us and you, our valued clients.

The good news is that we have been able to find a more than adequate replacement in Artin. He will be working with Tina over the coming weeks for a proper handover and introduction to you. Feel free to reach out and welcome him.

Exciting solution for locations where NB-IoT does not work.

We know it does not make sense. By rights, wherever you have 4G connectivity you should also have NB-IoT. However, as we have painfully experienced with some of you, in practice, that is often not the case. The great thing is that we now have an amazing alternative with our Log4 standalone IoT logger. It has pretty much the same capability and a similar price point.

New and “old” features in UtiliOS

We have again been very busy adding a swath of new features to UtiliOS. Most notable are:

  • Flex & Combo charts. This is being rolled out as we speak. It means you can now combine just about any series with any series – whether that's another water meter, tank level, pressure, pH, any water quality parameter or indeed weather data, and UtiliOS will automatically select the appropriate axes and units for it.
  • Actual water rates are now available for most Australian utilities which you can select and combine with your own SDF. UtiliOS then works out accurate cost savings based on the actual water charges for your site.
  • Global search got even better, covering just about any string from your device, meter, or site details.
  • Even more single click access to the most commonly used actions.

We have also noticed that many of you are unaware or are not taking full advantage of some of UtiliOS’ amazing features like:

  • One click sorting, filtering and diagnosing of devices with connection issues or zero data.
  • One click filtering for the highest priority alarms offering you the greatest ROI.
  • The most versatile date picker there is including panning and zooming allowing you to quickly zero in and out of the area of interest, selecting a period whether you prefer a date picker person, entering number of days, weeks or months, or keyboard date input, with matching stats always shown below.
  • AWARE Blue - Our amazing tool that allows you to regularly receive a nice summary with actionable data on the status of your fleet and again, leaks and abnormal water use. If you have not seen it yet, ask Zarif for a demo.

Are you using these features? We'd love to know.

UtiliOS data retention

To continue to be able to provide you the most cost-effective service, as foreshadowed in the December newsletter, we will implement data retention policies on UtiliOS as of 1 May 2025.

It will work like this:

  • As part of your normal subscription charges we will keep high resolution data collected for at least 2 years.
  • Thereafter, unless you let us know, all interval data older than 2 years will be moved to offline storage.

If you contact us before 30 April 2025:

  • We will give you an extra six months of free normal data storage for the first year.
  • We can keep the full high resolution or just daily data for longer for a small fee.
  • We can restore archived data for you on an ad hoc pay per service basis.
  • If you have any questions please talk to your Account Manager for further clarifications.

Thank you if you have read all the way up to here.

We look forward to seeing you at either Ozwater in Adelaide from 20 May, at the IWA Water Efficiency in Melbourne from 16 Sept, or before via email or phone.
